So, I eventually talked all of smallgang and Alex from Splintered Man into playing with me and Rama as ‘The Werewolves Of London’, a name inspired by the Warren Zevon song we all love.
This supergroup would be us all doing 100% improv with Pika☆ from Afrirampo/Acid Mothers Temple. I’d had the idea a while back when Simon smallgang said he was at a gig and there was a posse of cool looking Japanese Musicians that all knew each other and were part of this happening scene and he kind of wished he was part of something like that (which of course he is, but it’s not viewed as ‘conventionally cool’). Also in Japan there is a less wanky improv scene to that presently haunting London, so I thought we should have a go and it might just turn out more post punk sounding as we all do that in our bands.
Alex plays a Stratocaster via his new pedal board, Simon is on Jon One-Cats Bass, Toshi plays a Mini-Korg through his pedals, Matt is on a Laptop, Rama drums as does Pika and I play my normal Jazzmaster with Pedals. Damnably had put Pika’s first solo gig on in 2009, so I had seen then, she is an incredible drummer and force of nature as a creative entity. Check out her whole solo set here
Here is how it went down…

SET TWO Moon Mama – Pika plays songs from her new album and previous releases Get more info & updates on our Facebook event page here Pika from Osaka, Japan is the drummer from legendary Japanese duo ‘Afrirampo’ (2002-2010) who were described by All Tomorrow’s Parties main-man Barry Hogan as having one of the two greatest live shows ever to appear at ATP. Pika just released her second solo album ‘Ryu No Sumika’, that picked up 7.0 score in Pitchfork Very much part of Japan’s experimental Rock/improv scene and has played as part of Acid Mothers Temple, The Yoko Ono Band, toured with Sonic Youth, Lightening Bolt and killed it at 3 ATP’s. Live Pika plays both drums and guitar but you’ll never know what she’ll do. Simply one of the most arresting performers in the world today playing her second London solo show since we put her on back in December 2010. “The Japanese noise-rock duo’s enchantments and incantations cast such a spell over audiences it’s as though they are practicing sonic witchcraft” Everett true The Guardian It’s never long,…before Afrirampo are again off and running, joyfully veering to the cusp of feral, white-hot noise, as they drag their songs kicking and screaming towards distant untold possibilities.”7.9 Pitchfork |
Yes, this was one of my ideas-Rama and George play as The Werewolves Of London along with Simon, Toshi, Matt from smallgang
and Alex of Splintered Man/Radiohead. It should be a 3 drum improv show with 2/3 guitars and bass + keys.
Pika of Afrirampo/Acid Mothers Temple will play solo composed music after from her new album.

Other Info | Damnably is very proud to announce an exclusive and rare UK solo performance (on Guitar and Piano) from Shannon Wright. March 23rd 2012. Brixton Windmill 22 Blenheim Gardens, Brixton, London SW2 5BZ. 020 8671 0700. Doors 8pm, £10 Adv, £12 on Door. http://www.wegottickets.com/event/157671 http://www.gigantic.com/gigantic/event_gce_34025a.html http://www.ticketweb.co.uk/user/?region=gb_london&query=detail&event=494808&interface Over 18's only. Shannon Wright's alt.country trio Crowsdell released two acclaimed LPs for Big Cat during the 1990s. They were recorded by Steve Malkmus and were regular John Peel favourites. When Crowsdell disbanded in 97', Shannon Wright thought about quitting music. After borrowing a 4 track machine, however, Wright taught herself to play drums, and a musical metamorphosis was set in motion. Her solo releases since have unleashed a visceral, abrasive, and raw form of post-punk expressionism. Wright's guitar-playing, and her approach to composition are simply unique. Wright has recorded with Steve Albini and Yann Tierson, since signing to Touch and Go Records. She has made eight acclaimed albums (including FlightSafety, Maps of Tacit, Over The Sun, Let in the Light, and most recently, Secret Blood). In the live arena, she really shines; Shannon has been the touring partner of choice for Low, Sleater-Kinney, The Dirty Three, and Nick Cave, and was part of the ATP curated by Shellac and the Dirty Three. This is a rare opportunity to see a remarkable, intense, and groundbreaking performer in the U.K. Don't miss it. http://www.facebook.com/shannonwrightmusic?sk=wall http://www.viciouscircle.fr/site/?q=artistes%2F40 http://www.tgrec.com/bands/band.php?id=21 http://wearsthetrousers.com/2010/11/shannon-wright-secret-blood/ |
