HOPPER CONCLUSIONS My first attempts to isolate and describe "principles" of grammaticization were undertaken with a somewhat utilitarian impulse, that of identifying potential instances of grammaticization, possibly before a stage had been reached at which forms were unambiguously part of the grammar of the language. For this reason I tended to think of them as "heuristic" principles, in the sense that with them the linguist would not necessarily begin with already grammaticized forms and ask about their previous history, but would be able to select from among the rhetorical resources of texts those recurrent collocations that were candidates for being, at least marginally, "in" the grammar of the language.
