Release management is discussed in a subsequent chapter. Feature Patches Sometimes, a vendor will release a feature patch to introduce a new feature or function into an existing operating system or application. These types of patches can be developed for new software products or products that have been updated, usually to support a new option.

A zero-day exploit occurs when an exploit for a vulnerability is released the same day a patch is provided to protect the organization’s vulnerable systems.
