Expand your attention to the surroundings, the larger context in which this person—or your own voice—is speaking to you. ” . . “When did this event occur? ” . . “What else is happening in this moment? ” . . “How is this other person responding to all these factors, and how are you responding to the person? ” . . With all this additional information, it is very unlikely that the meaning of what the voice says is still the same. It is possible that the meaning changed somewhat at several—or even all—of the different steps in this process, or some steps may have been much more impactful than others.

Each step provides an opportunity to come to a new understanding, and you will often find that the meaning of the voice changes, either subtly or more significantly. However, if a step doesn’t offer you any new information, there will be no change in your response, so different people find different steps to be more significant to them than others. If you do this by yourself, you will need to pause after each step to do what the outline asks you to do, and then read the next step. Then you will need to reenter your experience of the previous step before doing what the next step asks you to do.

When you join with an internal voice, befriend it, and work toward understanding it better, you can establish a more positive relationship with it. It will become much more cooperative and willing to adjust what it says to you and how it says it. Although it may seem unlikely to you, it is even possible to make peace with a troublesome voice, and then negotiate with it and transform it, so that it speaks to you in ways that are much more pleasant, helpful, and useful. There are many different elements that can support you in accomplishing this, and the first few chapters of this book explore some of the most important ones.
